Form 2290 Filing Deadlines: When Is Form 2290 Due?

The primary Form 2290 deadline is August 31 each year. This applies to vehicles first used on public highways during the month of July – the start of the HVUT tax year. If your truck was on the road in July, your return and payment are due by August 31.

For vehicles first put in service after July, the deadline shifts. The rule is simple: file by the last day of the month following the month of first use. For example, if you put a new truck in service in September, your Form 2290 is due October 31.

There are no automatic extensions for Form 2290. Late filing triggers IRS penalties immediately. E-filing is the safest way to meet any deadline – you receive your stamped Schedule 1 within minutes and have proof of timely filing.

Key Deadline Rules You Need to Know

Annual Deadline: August 31

Every year, Form 2290 is due by August 31 for vehicles first used in July. The IRS tax year for HVUT runs from July 1 to June 30. Missing this deadline triggers a 4.5% monthly penalty on the tax owed.

New Vehicles: Last Day of Following Month

When you put a new heavy vehicle in service mid-year, Form 2290 is due by the last day of the month after first use. A truck first used in October requires a November 30 filing. IRS does not grant grace periods.

No Extensions Available

Unlike income tax returns, Form 2290 does not have an automatic extension option. If you miss the deadline, penalties and interest begin accruing immediately. The only relief is an IRS penalty abatement request, which is rarely granted without documented cause.

How to Meet Every Form 2290 Deadline

Stay ahead of IRS deadlines with this simple calendar-based approach to Form 2290 filing.

Know Your First Month of Use

The due date for Form 2290 is based on when your vehicle first hits the road. For existing trucks, that is typically July. For new or transferred vehicles, it is whatever month they first operate on public highways.

Mark Your Deadline on the Calendar

For July first-use vehicles, mark August 31. For any other month, count to the last day of the following month. Set reminders 2 to 3 weeks before so you have time to gather your EIN and VIN information.

E-File Early to Avoid Rush

E-filing takes less than 10 minutes. Filing early means you get your stamped Schedule 1 before it is needed for vehicle registration renewal. IRS accepts 2290 e-filings starting July 1 each year.

Download and Save Your Stamped Schedule 1

After IRS acceptance, save your stamped Schedule 1 immediately. This document is your proof of timely filing. Your state DMV will require it, and it protects you in the event of any IRS inquiry.

July: Due August 31

The primary HVUT deadline. Every vehicle first used in July must have Form 2290 filed and tax paid by August 31. This covers the vast majority of annual 2290 filers.

Vehicles first put in service during August - such as newly purchased trucks - must have Form 2290 filed by September 30. The pro-rated tax covers the remaining months of the tax year.
